What testing answers

Testing answers a material question — not a whole-building question

Bulk analysis determines whether asbestos is detected in the accepted sample and, where present, the fibre type within the applicable laboratory method.

Identify

Determine whether asbestos is detected in the accepted bulk material.

Report

Issue a traceable result linked to the sample reference and supplied location information.

Limit interpretation

Use the result for the submitted sample only; do not extend it to materials or areas that were not sampled.

UKAS-accredited inspection and testing, with the scope kept clear

Asbestos Surveying and Monitoring Ltd holds UKAS accreditation number 32982 for defined inspection activities to ISO/IEC 17020 and testing activities to ISO/IEC 17025. The current schedules define the accredited activities and locations. Bulk asbestos identification is undertaken at the Sunderland laboratory.

Accreditation applies to the organisation and its defined activities. Asbestos removal, preparation of management plans, watching briefs and soil remediation are not described as UKAS-accredited work.

Laboratory testing that contractors can trace to the right material

One reference for each location and material

Use the full Peterborough site address and a clear room, component and layer description. Where several properties share similar layouts, avoid generic labels such as “kitchen ceiling” without the property reference. The same identifiers should appear on the sample submission and supporting records so the result can be applied to the intended location.

Professional collection or booked submission

A site visit and laboratory-only testing are different instructions. Arrange trained collection where suitable material has not already been obtained. ASM’s bulk-analysis laboratory is in Sunderland; this page does not advertise a Peterborough drop-off point. Confirm acceptance, sealing, labelling and delivery arrangements before material is brought or sent to the laboratory.

Interpretation within the testing scope

Bulk identification answers a question about the accepted material. It does not certify a whole building, quantify historic exposure or replace soil investigation or air monitoring. If the proposed work extends beyond the sampled item, supply the larger brief so the project team can decide whether additional investigation is required.

Choose the collection route

The analysis is only as useful as the sample identity and context

Use professional collection where a safe and correctly identified sample does not already exist.

Professional Peterborough attendance

ASM attends, assesses the suspect material, collects and labels the sample, then arranges analysis.

Competent sample submission

A suitably collected sample can be submitted only under the current booking, acceptance, sealing, labelling and delivery arrangements.

Survey-linked analysis

Samples collected during a survey are referenced directly within the survey report and work-area context.

Laboratory route

Book → package → accept → analyse → report

1

The Sunderland laboratory checks identification, condition and suitability.

4

Report

The result is issued through the agreed route and interpreted within the submitted context.

Check the result before relying on it

Confirm the deliverables when agreeing the commission, then review the information against the actual property or work scope.

  • Confirm the accepted sample reference matches the material and location you submitted.
  • Retain the report identification, sample details, result and any stated limitations.
  • Resolve missing labels, unclear locations or unsuitable submissions with the laboratory.
  • Provide the correct result to the person assessing the proposed work, rather than using a certificate from another room or material.

If a location, quantity or assumption is unclear, resolve it before the relevant maintenance or construction stage. Keep reports and completion evidence together so the next contractor can understand what was assessed, what changed and what still needs attention.

Information to send before we arrange attendance

Property and purpose

Provide the full address, approximate size, current use and the decision you need the service to support. Include separate structures or adjoining areas that are part of the project. Tell us if the building was constructed or altered before 2000 and share any earlier asbestos records.

Work scope and evidence

Send relevant reports, marked plans, photographs taken safely and a concise description of any planned disturbance. State what will be retained as well as removed. Photographs help with scope but cannot confirm whether a material contains asbestos.

Access and programme

Give the proposed dates, occupancy, keyholder, parking or loading constraints and any restrictions on opening the fabric. Confirm who arranges isolation, escorts and specialist access. Attendance, laboratory turnaround and reporting dates are agreed for the project, rather than assumed from an online guide.

Sampling and laboratory-only prices cover different work

A laboratory-only fee covers the agreed analysis of an accepted sample. Site attendance, safe sample collection, multiple materials, access arrangements and a wider survey require a different scope. Explain whether you already have a correctly collected sample or need ASM to attend.

Confirm sample numbers, report requirements, acceptance criteria and the agreed turnaround before booking. A low analysis price should never be used as a reason to cut or break suspect material yourself. Where the planned work affects concealed construction, consider a refurbishment survey rather than isolated test certificates.

Peterborough service area and project enquiries

Discuss projects in Peterborough, Fletton, Stanground, Woodston, the Ortons, Bretton, Werrington and Dogsthorpe, alongside enquiries for Hampton and surrounding villages. Coverage is assessed against the exact postcode, service, access requirements and programme. The construction date and refurbishment history of the individual building determine the asbestos question; a neighbourhood name does not establish whether asbestos is present.

Arrange Peterborough attendance

Call 0330 433 9680 or email survey@asbestosSM.co.uk with the site address and purpose of the enquiry. Peterborough is a service area; this page does not advertise a separate staffed office or sample drop-off point.

Asbestos Testing Peterborough FAQs

Where is ASM's asbestos laboratory for Peterborough samples?

ASM's accredited bulk-analysis laboratory is at Sunderland headquarters, not Peterborough.

Is Peterborough asbestos testing UKAS accredited?

Bulk analysis is undertaken through ASM's Sunderland laboratory within its current UKAS 32982 ISO/IEC 17025 testing scope.

How are asbestos bulk samples analysed?

The bulk-identification method uses polarised light microscopy within the applicable laboratory method and accredited scope.

Can I send a sample without booking?

Book first and follow the laboratory's current acceptance, packaging, labelling, payment and submission instructions.

Does a negative test prove my property is asbestos-free?

No. It applies only to the accepted sample and its recorded material location.

Can a test result tell me whether removal is licensed?

Not by itself. Work category depends on material, condition, friability, task, scale, duration and expected exposure.

Can I drop samples at a Peterborough office?

No Peterborough sample drop-off point is advertised. Contact ASM for the current Sunderland laboratory submission arrangements, or arrange professional collection from the site.

How should samples from several Peterborough addresses be labelled?

Give each sample a unique reference linked to the full property address, room, component and relevant material layer. Keep the same references in the submission and supporting photographs or survey records.

Which Peterborough areas can I enquire about?

Contact ASM for Peterborough, Fletton, Stanground, Woodston, the Ortons, Bretton, Werrington, Dogsthorpe, Hampton and surrounding-area projects. Attendance is confirmed against the postcode, scope, access and programme.
