Asbestos Air Monitoring Services
Asbestos air monitoring is used to measure airborne fibre levels during, before or after asbestos-related works. It provides important reassurance that asbestos control measures are effective and that areas are safe for continued use or reoccupation.
Our asbestos analysts can attend sites across the UK to carry out air testing using controlled sampling methods, fibre counting and clear reporting.
Our Asbestos Air Monitoring Services Include:
Background Air Monitoring
Background air monitoring is usually carried out before asbestos works begin. It helps establish the existing airborne fibre level within or around the work area before removal, remediation or disturbance takes place.
This can be useful for occupied buildings, sensitive sites, schools, healthcare premises, commercial properties and construction projects.
Leak Air Monitoring
Leak testing is commonly carried out outside asbestos removal enclosures during licensed asbestos removal works. It helps check that the enclosure, negative pressure units and control measures are working effectively and that fibres are not escaping from the work area.
Leak monitoring is often required on larger or higher-risk asbestos removal projects.
Reassurance Air Monitoring
Reassurance air testing is carried out where there may be concern that asbestos-containing materials have been disturbed or where asbestos works have taken place and additional confidence is required.
This may be suitable after accidental damage, minor remedial works, emergency works, maintenance activities or where building users require confirmation that airborne fibre levels are acceptable.
Personal Air Monitoring
Personal air monitoring assesses potential fibre exposure to individuals carrying out asbestos-related works. This can support contractor compliance, exposure assessment and review of working methods.
Personal monitoring may be used for asbestos removal operatives, maintenance teams, tradespeople and other workers who may be exposed to asbestos fibres during specific tasks.
Clearance Air Monitoring
Clearance air monitoring forms part of the 4 Stage Clearance process following licensed asbestos removal works. It is used to confirm that airborne fibre concentrations within the enclosure or work area are below the required clearance indicator before the area can proceed to final stages of handover.
4 Stage Clearance and Certificate of Reoccupation
A 4 Stage Clearance is a formal process carried out after licensed asbestos removal works. It is designed to confirm that the asbestos removal area, enclosure and surrounding areas have been properly cleaned, inspected and tested before being returned for normal use.
Where the 4 Stage Clearance is successfully completed, a Certificate of Reoccupation can be issued.
This process is a critical part of asbestos removal project control and helps protect building users, contractors, dutyholders and members of the public.
What Is Included in a 4 Stage Clearance?
Stage 1: Preliminary Check of Site Condition and Job Completeness
The analyst checks that the asbestos removal works appear complete and that the site is ready for formal inspection. This includes reviewing the condition of the enclosure, transit route, waste route, viewing panels, hygiene facilities and general site arrangements.
The analyst will also check that the work area is suitable for the clearance process to begin.
Stage 2: Thorough Visual Inspection
The analyst carries out a detailed visual inspection inside the enclosure or work area. This is one of the most important stages of the clearance process.
The area must be free from visible asbestos debris, dust and residue before air testing can proceed. If the visual inspection fails, the area must be re-cleaned by the removal contractor before it can be reassessed.
Stage 3: Clearance Air Monitoring
Once the visual inspection has been passed, clearance air monitoring is carried out inside the enclosure or work area.
Air samples are collected and analysed to assess airborne fibre concentrations. The area must achieve the required clearance indicator before the process can move to the final stage.
Stage 4: Final Assessment After Enclosure Dismantling
After the enclosure has been dismantled, the analyst completes a final inspection of the area and surrounding locations to ensure the site remains clean and suitable for reoccupation.
Once all four stages have been successfully completed, a Certificate of Reoccupation is issued.
