Identify the material, preserve the reference and report the result

Commercial asbestos testing should connect an accepted sample to the correct job, property and material. This allows your team to use the laboratory result within its survey, maintenance or construction records.

Bulk material identification

Analysis establishes whether asbestos is detected in the submitted sample and identifies the asbestos type where detected, within the applicable laboratory method and accredited scope.

Traceable sample references

Provide a unique reference for every sample, supported by the site address, material description and location. Consistent references help connect the laboratory report to your own records.

Defined result scope

The finding applies to the material received. It does not establish the asbestos status of other materials, hidden layers, an entire property or a wider demolition or refurbishment area.

Relevant submissions may include suitably collected samples of textured coatings, floor tiles and associated adhesives, cement products, boards, insulation and other suspect building materials. Describe unusual materials, mixed samples or complex matrices when booking so the laboratory can confirm suitability and scope.

Apply through ASM’s main contact form

To request a new trade account, open the main contact form and enter “Trade laboratory account” in the work description. Include your company name, contact details, anticipated sample volumes, usual turnaround and invoicing or purchase-order requirements.

New trade account

Tell us who will submit samples, your typical batch size and whether work is regular or project-based. ASM will confirm eligibility, rates and payment or account arrangements before your first trade submission.

Existing approved account

Use the laboratory booking form for each new submission. Include your company or account reference, sample schedule, project or purchase-order number and required report date.

Samples still need collecting

If material remains in the building and has not been competently sampled, arrange professional collection. Laboratory-only rates do not include a surveyor’s visit, access arrangements or sampling.

Several sites or a wider programme

For recurring submissions across a property portfolio, outline the sites, expected volumes, report references and authorised contacts. Broader survey or compliance needs can be scoped alongside the laboratory work.

Account approval and any credit terms are confirmed separately. Sending an account enquiry does not itself create an approved account, reserve laboratory capacity or confirm a sample booking.

One booking route from sample schedule to laboratory report

We accept postal material samples at our Sunderland laboratory. Book through the existing laboratory route and follow the submission instructions issued for your work.

1

Book the batch

Provide the sample count, site references, turnaround and report requirements. Identify your approved trade arrangement and any purchase order.

2

Prepare the submission

Follow the confirmed sealing, labelling and packaging instructions. Every prepared sample should match its entry on the submitted schedule.

3

Laboratory acceptance

The laboratory checks identification, condition and suitability. Missing details or acceptance issues may need resolving before analysis begins.

4

Analysis and reporting

Accepted samples are analysed within the agreed scope and the results issued through the confirmed reporting route with their sample references.

When turnaround starts: the Sunderland laboratory must have received and accepted the sample, with the confirmed payment or account arrangements in place. Submitting a form or posting a sample does not start the analysis period. Ask ASM to confirm the report due date, applicable working days and any receipt cut-off for your booking.

Sunderland laboratory, UKAS number 32982

Asbestos Surveying and Monitoring Ltd holds UKAS accreditation number 32982 for defined testing activities to ISO/IEC 17025. Bulk asbestos identification is undertaken at Sunderland Head Office, within the activities and locations covered by the current accreditation schedule.

Our Sunderland laboratory page provides the laboratory information and accreditation route. HSE also explains the use of accredited laboratories for analysis of suspected asbestos-containing materials.

Sampling competence matters. Submit representative material collected by a suitably trained and competent person. If no appropriate sample exists, arrange professional collection before requesting laboratory analysis.

A laboratory route for regular professional submissions

The account discussion should reflect how your business works: recurring survey batches, a contractor’s project programme or submissions from several occupied properties.

Surveyors and consultancies

Connect sample IDs with survey drawings, room references and material records. Explain your normal submission frequency, report deadlines and any client-specific referencing requirements when setting up the account.

Contractors and project teams

Keep the site, work area and programme deadline clear. Laboratory identification informs material decisions; the result alone does not determine the removal work category or replace a suitable assessment of the planned work.

Property and facilities teams

Separate samples by property and identify the person authorised to receive results. Where the wider need is a managed estate programme, discuss sampling, surveys and laboratory reporting together.

Give the laboratory the details your team needs on the report

A good sample schedule prevents avoidable queries and makes the issued result easier to use. Confirm the following when booking:

  • Company name, account reference and booking contact.
  • Site address and your project or purchase-order reference.
  • A unique sample ID, material description and precise location for each sample.
  • The required report date and nominated recipient.
  • Whether different properties require separate reports.
  • Any requested reporting format or additional document-control requirement, for confirmation before work starts.

If a report reference needs clarification or correction, contact the laboratory with the report number and sample ID so the request can be reviewed.

One laboratory supporting submissions from across Great Britain

The laboratory submission service supports trade clients across England, Scotland and Wales. The physical analysis location is Sunderland; a client’s distance from a regional office does not define the postal laboratory route.

Local collection and wider business support

ASM’s regional services can support projects requiring professional attendance, while laboratory analysis is undertaken through Sunderland. Regional offices and service hubs are not presented as separate accredited bulk-analysis laboratories or automatic sample drop-off points.

Use the national sampling page and local service routes if collection is required. For recurring work across several sites, use the corporate services route.

We accept postal material samples. Confirm your booking and submission instructions before sending material to the laboratory.

Commercial asbestos sample analysis: your questions answered

Who is eligible for the £9.65 trade analysis rate?

The five-day £9.65 + VAT rate is for eligible businesses with an approved ASM trade account submitting suitable bulk material samples. It is a laboratory-only rate and excludes on-site collection. Account arrangements, sample acceptance and booking confirmation apply.

How much can a trade account save on bulk sample lots?

Published volume bands are 10% for 6–10 eligible samples, 15% for 11–50 and 20% for 51 or more. At 20% off the £9.65 five-day rate, the price is £7.72 + VAT per sample. Discounts, the qualifying lot and the final batch total must be confirmed in writing.

How do I apply for a trade laboratory account?

Use ASM’s main contact form and enter “Trade laboratory account” in the work description. Provide your company and contact details, expected sample volumes, normal turnaround and invoicing requirements. ASM will confirm eligibility and account arrangements before trade bookings are accepted.

Where should an existing account holder book sample analysis?

Use the existing laboratory sample booking form, selecting the trade or company-account route. Include your company or account reference, sample schedule, site details, purchase order where applicable and required report date.

When does the five-day turnaround begin?

Turnaround starts after the Sunderland laboratory receives and accepts the samples and the confirmed payment or account arrangements are in place. Confirm the report due date, working-day basis and any receipt cut-off when booking. Sending a form or posting a sample does not start the analysis period.

Can I request faster trade analysis?

Three-day and one-day trade options can be discussed with the laboratory. Availability, the applicable rate and the reporting deadline must be confirmed for the booking. The five-day rate and bulk discount should not be assumed to apply to faster work.

Do you accept postal material samples from businesses outside Sunderland?

Yes. ASM accepts postal material samples at its Sunderland laboratory from trade clients across England, Scotland and Wales. Book first and follow the laboratory’s issued submission instructions.

Can one trade submission cover more than one property?

Tell the laboratory each site address and give every sample a unique reference, material description and location. State whether you require separate reports by property and identify the relevant purchase orders and report recipients before booking.

Does the trade price include collecting a sample from my site?

No. Trade laboratory pricing applies to prepared material samples accepted for analysis. If samples have not already been collected by a suitably trained and competent person, request professional sample collection separately.

Is the analysis UKAS accredited, and what does the result establish?

ASM holds UKAS number 32982 for defined ISO/IEC 17025 testing activities. Bulk sample analysis is undertaken at the Sunderland laboratory within the current accredited scope. The result applies to the accepted sample and does not establish that an entire property is asbestos-free or replace an appropriate asbestos survey.

Tell us your sample volumes and reporting requirements

Use the main contact form to request a trade laboratory account. Include your company details, expected batch sizes and usual turnaround so ASM can confirm the appropriate commercial arrangement.
