Before You Send a Sample

Wait for booking confirmation and follow the laboratory submission instructions. This protects the sample, preserves the reference trail and avoids delays caused by incomplete or unsuitable packages.

Prepare the Submission

  1. Only send samples collected by a suitably trained and competent person.
  2. Keep every sample sealed and clearly labelled with the same reference used on the booking schedule.
  3. Place the sealed samples and booking reference in a robust outer package, following ASM’s confirmed instructions.
  4. Do not send loose, unsealed or visibly contaminated packaging.

Asbestos Sample Testing Questions

Important information about sample collection, submission, turnaround times and laboratory reporting.

Can I take an asbestos sample myself?
HSE advises that asbestos sampling should be carried out by a suitably trained person. If a sample has not already been collected, do not disturb the material; ASM can provide a quotation for controlled sample collection.
When does the laboratory turnaround time begin?
Turnaround begins after the Sunderland laboratory receives and accepts the sample and the confirmed payment or account arrangements are in place. It does not begin when the form is submitted or the package is posted.
What does the laboratory report tell me?
The report records whether asbestos was detected in the submitted sample and, where detected, identifies the asbestos type. A sample result relates only to the submitted material and is not a substitute for a suitable asbestos survey where a wider property or planned works must be assessed.
Can ASM collect the sample from my property or site?
Yes. Choose the collection option in the booking form or visit the asbestos sampling page. Provide the site postcode, material location and access details so ASM can prepare the appropriate quotation.
Who can apply for ASM trade laboratory rates?
Trade pricing is intended for eligible asbestos surveyors, consultants, contractors and commercial clients. Rates, discounts, payment terms and account facilities are confirmed by ASM before analysis.
What happens if my packaging or sample information is incomplete?
The laboratory may need to contact you before accepting or analysing the sample. Clear labels, a matching sample schedule, contact details and the confirmed booking reference help prevent delays.

Laboratory analysis confirms whether asbestos is present in a submitted sample. Other services may be required where a wider property, refurbishment project or damaged material needs to be assessed.

Arrange Sample Collection

ASM can attend your property or site to collect representative samples from specific suspect materials under controlled conditions.
