The commonly referenced 0.01 fibres/cm³ clearance indicator is not a universal statement that every environment below that value is ‘asbestos free’ or a general safe exposure limit. Results need the monitoring purpose and site conditions to be meaningful.
Define the activity
Record what work was happening, enclosure status, cleaning stage, disturbance, weather or ventilation conditions and any other factors that affect interpretation.
Use the right locations
Sample positions should answer the specific question: outside an enclosure, within a cleaned area, at an occupied boundary, in a worker breathing zone or at another agreed point.
Control the source first
If suspect asbestos is damaged or disturbed, stop further disturbance and control access. Air monitoring does not replace removal of debris, cleaning or correction of the source.
Keep analytical scope separate
ASM’s UKAS accreditation applies to defined inspection and testing activities and locations on current schedules. Removal itself is not a UKAS-accredited activity.
