Is 0.010 fibres per millilitre a safe asbestos exposure limit?

No. It is the clearance indicator used at Stage 3 of the applicable four-stage clearance process. It is not the legal control limit, a universal safe exposure limit or proof of zero fibres.

Can an air test prove a property is asbestos-free?

No. Air monitoring measures fibre concentration for a defined sampling period and location. It does not identify every asbestos-containing material in the building; a suitable survey or sampling strategy is needed for material identification.

Is ASM air monitoring UKAS accredited?

ASM is UKAS-accredited under number 32982 for defined testing activities to ISO/IEC 17025. The current UKAS schedule defines the precise accredited activities and locations.

Is asbestos air monitoring real-time?

No. Routine asbestos air monitoring collects a measured air volume onto a filter and the sample is then examined by microscopy. It is not continuous real-time asbestos detection.

Who completes four-stage clearance?

It is completed by an appropriately independent analyst under the applicable accredited testing arrangements for enclosure work requiring the full clearance process.

Does a satisfactory result guarantee no asbestos is present?

No. An air result relates to the sampling purpose, time, location and conditions. It does not prove that a building or work area contains no asbestos materials.
