What is sprayed asbestos coating?

Sprayed asbestos coatings were applied to structural steel, reinforced concrete and other building surfaces to provide fire protection, thermal insulation, acoustic insulation and anti-condensation properties.

They are sometimes referred to as Limpet asbestos, although sprayed asbestos coatings were installed using several products and methods.

HSE describes sprayed coatings as one of the most dangerous asbestos-containing materials because they can contain very high proportions of asbestos and break up extremely easily.

Even minor disturbance can release large quantities of fibres. HSE therefore states that all work with sprayed asbestos coatings is high risk and must be undertaken by an HSE-licensed contractor.

Do not confuse sprayed asbestos coating with decorative Artex

Textured decorative coatings such as Artex are a different ACM category and can often be lower-risk. Sprayed asbestos insulation and fireproofing coatings are much more friable and HSE states that all work on them is high risk and must be undertaken by a licensed contractor.

Every sprayed-coating project requires a site-specific risk assessment and detailed plan of work. The outline below describes the general professional process rather than providing removal instructions.

Fibre suppression

Wet-removal techniques can significantly affect fibre control

Because sprayed asbestos coating can release very high concentrations of fibres when disturbed, the removal method must reduce fibre release at source as far as reasonably practicable.

Coating thickness, porosity, sealants, paint, substrate and deterioration can all influence how fibre-suppression measures work. The licensed contractor therefore establishes the detailed method through the risk assessment and plan of work rather than applying one generic removal technique to every building.

Hidden scope

Overspray can make the actual asbestos area larger than expected

HSE specifically notes that the historic application process could create overspray or splash-back around the main treated surface.

Structural connections Coating can extend around bolts, junctions and steelwork connections.
Adjacent services Pipework, conduits, cable trays and other services may have been present when spraying was carried out.

What happens afterwards?

Removal can create a fire-protection reinstatement requirement

Sprayed asbestos was often installed specifically to provide fire protection to structural steel or concrete.

Removing the asbestos does not remove the underlying need for the structure to achieve the required fire-resistance performance.

Depending on the building and project, follow-on works may therefore involve replacement protection such as an appropriately designed:

  • board fire-protection system;
  • sprayed non-asbestos fireproofing system;
  • intumescent system;
  • encasement;
  • other specified passive-fire protection.

Do not remove structural fire protection without considering the replacement

The asbestos-removal scope and the building's required fire strategy should be coordinated so that removing the ACM does not leave the structural frame without its required level of protection.
