When is asbestos air monitoring required?
It depends on the work, material, control strategy and legal category. Monitoring may be used for reassurance, leak checks, worker exposure assessment or statutory four-stage clearance. The objective should be agreed before sampling.
What is the asbestos clearance level?
For four-stage clearance, the clearance indicator is 0.010 fibres per millilitre. This should not be confused with the legal control limit for worker exposure.
Can air testing prove a room has no asbestos?
No. Air monitoring measures airborne fibres during the sampling period and under the conditions present. It does not locate asbestos-containing materials or prove that concealed materials are absent.
Who should arrange four-stage clearance?
Clearance should be undertaken independently by a competent analytical organisation. It should be planned early so access, timing and responsibilities are clear before removal begins.
