What testing answers

Testing answers a material question — not a whole-building question

Bulk analysis determines whether asbestos is detected in the accepted sample and, where present, the fibre type within the applicable laboratory method.

Identify

Determine whether asbestos is detected in the accepted bulk material.

Report

Issue a traceable result linked to the sample reference and supplied location information.

Limit interpretation

Use the result for the submitted sample only; do not extend it to materials or areas that were not sampled.

UKAS-accredited inspection and testing, with the scope kept clear

Asbestos Surveying and Monitoring Ltd holds UKAS accreditation number 32982 for defined inspection activities to ISO/IEC 17020 and testing activities to ISO/IEC 17025. The current schedules define the accredited activities and locations. Bulk asbestos identification is undertaken at the Sunderland laboratory.

Accreditation applies to the organisation and its defined activities. Asbestos removal, preparation of management plans, watching briefs and soil remediation are not described as UKAS-accredited work.

Make the laboratory result traceable to the Berwick material

Record the site and location precisely

Use a unique sample reference with the property address, room or external location, component and layer. “House sample” is not enough if a contractor later needs to identify one of several ceiling finishes. Keep the description consistent between the booking, container, photographs and any survey record supplied with the material.

Agree collection before submission

If you have not already obtained a suitable sample through a competent person, arrange professional attendance. ASM’s accredited bulk-analysis laboratory is in Sunderland; no Berwick laboratory or walk-in drop-off point is advertised here. Confirm the current acceptance and delivery instructions before bringing or sending any material.

Apply the result to the right decision

A positive bulk result identifies asbestos in that accepted sample. A negative result is limited to the sample and context; it does not approve removal of other layers or certify a whole property. For redevelopment, soil investigation or air monitoring, ask for the appropriate service and analytical method rather than assuming a bulk-material certificate covers it.

Choose the collection route

The analysis is only as useful as the sample identity and context

Use professional collection where a safe and correctly identified sample does not already exist.

Professional Berwick-upon-Tweed attendance

ASM attends, assesses the suspect material, collects and labels the sample, then arranges analysis.

Competent sample submission

A suitably collected sample can be submitted only under the current booking, acceptance, sealing, labelling and delivery arrangements.

Survey-linked analysis

Samples collected during a survey are referenced directly within the survey report and work-area context.

Check the result before relying on it

Confirm the deliverables when agreeing the commission, then review the information against the actual property or work scope.

  • Confirm the accepted sample reference matches the material and location you submitted.
  • Retain the report identification, sample details, result and any stated limitations.
  • Resolve missing labels, unclear locations or unsuitable submissions with the laboratory.
  • Provide the correct result to the person assessing the proposed work, rather than using a certificate from another room or material.

If a location, quantity or assumption is unclear, resolve it before the relevant maintenance or construction stage. Keep reports and completion evidence together so the next contractor can understand what was assessed, what changed and what still needs attention.

Information to send before we arrange attendance

Property and purpose

Provide the full address, approximate size, current use and the decision you need the service to support. Include separate structures or adjoining areas that are part of the project. Tell us if the building was constructed or altered before 2000 and share any earlier asbestos records.

Work scope and evidence

Send relevant reports, marked plans, photographs taken safely and a concise description of any planned disturbance. State what will be retained as well as removed. Photographs help with scope but cannot confirm whether a material contains asbestos.

Access and programme

Give the proposed dates, occupancy, keyholder, parking or loading constraints and any restrictions on opening the fabric. Confirm who arranges isolation, escorts and specialist access. Attendance, laboratory turnaround and reporting dates are agreed for the project, rather than assumed from an online guide.

Sampling and laboratory-only prices cover different work

A laboratory-only fee covers the agreed analysis of an accepted sample. Site attendance, safe sample collection, multiple materials, access arrangements and a wider survey require a different scope. Explain whether you already have a correctly collected sample or need ASM to attend.

Confirm sample numbers, report requirements, acceptance criteria and the agreed turnaround before booking. A low analysis price should never be used as a reason to cut or break suspect material yourself. Where the planned work affects concealed construction, consider a refurbishment survey rather than isolated test certificates.
