Result scope

The result identifies asbestos detected in the sample received. Its usefulness depends on representative collection, correct labelling and a reliable link between the sample, material and location. A submitted sample cannot establish what exists elsewhere in a building.

Safe and traceable submission

Before a sample is posted or delivered

  1. 1

    Book

Provide client, site, material, sample-number, turnaround and report information and wait for confirmation.

  2. 2

    Package

Follow the issued sealing, labelling and packaging instructions. Do not rely on unconfirmed online advice.

  3. 3

    Accept

The laboratory checks booking, packaging, identification, condition and suitability before analysis begins.

  4. 4

    Report

Results are issued through the agreed route and must be interpreted within the submitted sample’s location and scope.

Do not create a sample merely to access a low analysis price. Cutting or scraping suspect asbestos can release fibres. Use professional Manchester sampling when the material has not already been collected by a suitably trained and competent person.

Testing is not surveying

Know what the certificate can and cannot answer

  • It can identify asbestos detected in the accepted sample
  • It can report the asbestos type where detected
  • It cannot confirm an entire room or building is asbestos-free
  • It cannot show the condition or extent of material elsewhere
  • It cannot replace a management survey for a whole building
  • It cannot replace a refurbishment or demolition survey
  • It does not determine the work category by itself
  • It does not prove that removal is required

Laboratory identification of asbestos fibres

Bulk analysis identifies fibres in the submitted sample; the result does not establish the condition of every material in a building.

Frequently asked questions

Manchester asbestos testing FAQs

Is there an ASM asbestos testing laboratory in Manchester?

No. ASM’s UKAS-accredited bulk-analysis laboratory is at Sunderland Head Office. The Manchester office supports local enquiries and professional sample collection.

How much is public asbestos sample analysis?

The current published standard price is £25 per accepted sample. Public urgent analysis is £50 per accepted sample, subject to prior booking, acceptance and laboratory capacity.

When does the laboratory turnaround start?

Turnaround starts after the Sunderland laboratory receives and accepts the sample and confirmed payment or account arrangements are in place. It does not start when a form is submitted or a sample is posted.

Can I send a sample without booking?

No. Book first and wait for the laboratory to confirm the correct service, reference, packaging, submission, payment and turnaround arrangements.

Can ASM collect the sample in Manchester?

Yes. If the sample has not already been taken safely, ASM can arrange controlled professional collection at the Manchester property or site and transfer it for analysis.

Does a laboratory result say whether removal is licensed?

Not by itself. Work category depends on material type, condition, friability, scale, duration and work method. A competent risk assessment must determine whether work is licensed, NNLW or non-licensed.

Do trade discounts apply automatically?

No. Trade rates and volume discounts are subject to eligibility, account approval, booking, sample acceptance, laboratory capacity and written confirmation.

Does a negative test prove the property is asbestos-free?

No. It applies only to the sample submitted and its recorded material location. Other materials, layers and hidden areas may be different.
